DEFINITION: This is non-professional guidance work in the care, custody, and supervision of children in a structured setting.

An employee in this class is responsible for the care, custody, and training of children in a structured setting. The nature of care varies to some extent in accordance with the reasons for which the children are receiving care. These reasons include delinquency, dependency, physical or mental handicaps and vocational education. The work involves physical care and custody and guidance in personal hygiene, work and study habits, and social, religious, and recreational activities. Employees have responsibility for housekeeping duties in the quarters in which the children live. Employees supervise the children in work and recreational activities. Work is performed under supervision which is carried out through personal inspection and conferences on the more difficult problems. Serious behavior problems are dealt with by the supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  Supervises the daily activities of children, including dressing, eating, performing work assignments, playing and studying.

Teaches children personal hygiene, acceptable manners and good work and study habits.

Guides children in their emotional and social growth.

Performs household duties such as cleaning, cooking, and sewing, and care of linen and furnishings.

Maintains order and discipline, and prevents escapes.

Supervises recreational activities and work assignments.

Completes an orientation program that includes such areas as data entry, medication administration, first aid, CPR, policies and procedures, confidentiality, emergency procedures, etc.

Ensures a safe, clean and healthy environment by conducting daily home inspections.

Reports needed home repairs and maintenance to supervisors.

Maintains adherence to OSHA, first aid, and universal precautions standards and procedures.

Implements individualized goal attainment plans.

Implements a developmentally appropriate behavior management system.

Recognizes individuals' health care needs, and refers to medical care when appropriate.

Makes arrangements for medical and dental services.

Maintains and secures prescription and non-prescription medications and other medical and first aid supplies.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Knowledge of the principles and methods of child care.

Knowledge of housekeeping methods.

Ability to communicate orally.

Ability to communicate in writing.
