PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES ASSOCIATE 1

Definition:  This is professional work in the field of psychological services.

Employees in this class perform a variety of limited professional tasks in the areas of direct services, research or training in the psychological services program. Work includes planned assignments to provide orientation in professional techniques and methods and agency policies and regulations. Training is accomplished through individual and group conferences, reading records and reports and the assignment of appropriate professional readings. Formal course work planned by the employee and his supervisor may be required. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a professional supervisor and is evaluated for effectiveness of methodology and techniques.

Examples of Work:  Performs the less difficult administration, scoring and interpretation of tests of intelligence, achievement, aptitudes and interests.

Interviews clients and patients at institutions for individuals with mental disabilities and rehabilitation and diagnostic centers to determine psychological case classifications.

Discusses test and interview findings with a supervisor.

Observes and records behaviors during group therapy sessions.

Completes training in individual counseling techniques through the observation and study of recorded interviews.

Interprets standard psychological tests as a part of a broader evaluation of either personality factors or the functional capacities of individuals with mental disabilities.

Completes training in the administration and interpretation of projective tests and in the evaluation of patterns of personality characteristics revealed by objective tests.

Under supervision, selects and utilizes appropriate psychological techniques designed to modify behavior.

Records and compiles statistics in the research activities of a psychological services program.

Attends and completes formal coursework planned with the advice of a supervisor.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of the principles of psychology and related behavioral sciences.

Knowledge of the principles and methods of administering, scoring and interpreting standard psychological tests.

Knowledge of mental disabilities, their care and treatment and their social implications.

Knowledge of psychological techniques employed in the modification of human behavior.

Knowledge of current psychological theories and practices.

Knowledge of the principles and methods of statistical research and experimental design applied to the field of psychology.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Minimum Experience and Training:  A master’s degree in psychology or a closely related field.
