VAN DRIVER                                                                                                          L0886

Definition:

This is manual work in the operation of a light motor vehicle to transport clients of a local county government agency. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a light motor vehicle in the daily transporting of clients to and from various activities and/or appointments. Employees may be required to participate in training programs as appropriate, to insure the safety of the vehicle and/or clients. Supervision is received from an administrative superior and assignments are made in the form of specific schedules. Work is subject to review through observation of results and safety of equipment operation.

Examples of Work:

Operates a light motor vehicle such as a passenger car or van to transport program clients.

Assists clients in entering/exiting vehicle as necessary to insure safety.

Performs normal operator maintenance and safety checks of vehicle such as tire pressure, cleanliness of vehicle, and proper workings of signals, horns, etc.

Completes reports as necessary, on number of clients served per day, and geographical locations served.

Maintains records for servicing and inspection of vehicle.

Transports light supplies to program locations, as required.

Logs vehicle mileage daily.

Participates in training as appropriate.

Performs related duties as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the geographical area served.

Knowledge of traffic laws of the state.

Knowledge of the principles of operation of automotive equipment sufficient to detect defective operation.

Ability to operate an automobile safely and skillfully.

Ability to establish effective relationships with clients.

Ability to understand and carry out written instructions.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

One year of employment which required operation of a motor vehicle as a regular duty;

Or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Necessary Special Requirement:

Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Conditions of Employment:

No suspension of driver’s license within the last three years.  For some positions, employees in this class must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License supplemented by appropriate endorsements.  

For some positions, candidates who have received a conditional offer of employment will be required to undergo a medical examination.
