AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC L1006
Definition: This is skilled journeyman mechanics work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment.
An employee in this class has responsibility for the performance of skilled mechanics tasks in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, rollers, graders, sweepers, power shovels, and other construction and maintenance equipment. Employees also perform all repairs on diesel equipment with the exception of the diagnosis, parts rebuilding, and repair of the diesel engine fuel injection system (injectors and pumps). Employees occasionally lead other workers in accomplishing assigned projects. The employe works under general supervision, using independent judgment concerning the method of repair after receiving oral or written work orders setting forth a problem condition with respect to the operation of a piece of equipment. Supervisory review involves spot checking or testing results during work or upon completion.
Examples of Work: Repairs and overhauls motorcycles, automobiles, trucks, shovels, tractors, air compressors, bulldozers, cement mixers, and related equipment.
Repairs and replaces shock absorbers, transmissions, meters, clutches, brakes, and all parts of automobile equipment; checks and balances wheels for proper alignment; makes minor body repairs; and overhauls and tests generators and other electrical components on automotive equipment.
Rebuilds hydraulic systems on construction equipment.
Inspects all power-driven vehicles that travel the public highways for compliance with state regulations.
Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on diesel powered equipment including minor repairs on the diesel engine itself.
Services all filters on diesel engines; replaces water pumps; gaskets and other parts on a diesel engine; repairs the electrical system on diesel engines; and performs all other repairs on diesel equipment excluding the diagnosis, parts rebuilding, and repair of the diesel engine fuel injection system (injectors and pumps).
Performs emergency road service, including any necessary on-site repair work.
Prepares records and reports on work accomplished.
Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
Knowledge of the principles of operation and construction of internal combustion engines.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Skill in locating and correcting defects in motor equipment.
Skill in the care and use of the tools and equipment employed in repairing and adjusting motor equipment.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to keep records related to automotive repair and maintenance.
Minimum Experience and Training: Four years of experience
in the automotive mechanic trade; or completion of an approved apprenticeship;
or
Any combination of experience and/or training which provided the applicant with the above listed required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
Necessary Special Requirement: Using agency may require certification as a Pennsylvania Official Certified Motor Vehicle Inspection Mechanic.
