Definition:

This is responsible manual work in the custodial care of public or institutional buildings and surrounding grounds.

An employee in this class functions as a lead worker and has responsibility for cleaning an assigned area such as a small building, a portion of a larger building, a wing of a hospital, or a group of offices including his/her own work and the work of a small group of lower level custodial workers. Duties require making routine work decisions independently although work usually follows established methods and work procedures. Employees in this class perform lead work duties such as ordering and reordering supplies for the storage space for their assigned area, distributing supplies to other workers of the group, insuring that all supplies are put away at the end of the shift, maintaining time sheets for members of the group, reporting needed repairs to a supervisor, and training new employees in the materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations. Work is reviewed by a technical supervisor for adherence to work standards.

Examples of Work:

Functions as a lead worker for a small group of 2-8 lower level custodial workers working together in an assigned area.

Requisitions janitorial supplies, distributes supplies and checks the use of supplies and equipment.

Maintains time sheets for members of the group.

Trains new employees in the methods and materials used in cleaning.

Reports needed repairs in area to supervisor.

Washes, waxes, dusts, and polishes floors, furniture and fixtures.

Cleans and polishes brass; cleans lavatories and replaces lavatory supplies; disposes of waste paper.

Shovels snow, sweeps and cleans walks, and assists in keeping immediate outside premises and building entrances in an orderly condition.

Moves furniture and equipment; delivers supplies.

Operates small heating plants or furnaces; removes ashes, and cleans boiler room.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in custodial work.

Knowledge of the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.

Ability to train new employees in the methods and materials used in cleaning an assigned area.

Ability to make minor repairs to building fixtures and equipment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, keep simple records, and make simple reports.

Sufficient physical strength to work at custodial tasks.

Minimum Experience and Training:

One year of experience in custodial work.
