Definition: This is beginning level home management work of a training nature providing homemaker services or assistance of an instructional nature in the field of public welfare.

An employee in this class receives formal and on-the-job training designed to develop basic skills in performing a variety of assigned home management duties in the homes of the aged, the chronically ill, or families where parents are unable to provide adequate physical and emotional care for children; and in learning to provide assistance of an instructional nature in such basic techniques of home management as budgeting, child care, and food selection and preparation. Training and initial work assignments are performed under close supervision by a professional or technical supervisor. Supervision is provided through individual and group conferences, evaluation of performance and potential in training programs, and visits to clients' homes.

Examples of Work: Participates in formal and on-the-job training designed to develop the requisite knowledges, skills, and abilities for assisting and instructing clients in the maintenance of a stable household.

Assists in maintaining normal routines for children, the chronically ill, or aged adults in their own homes, performing or assisting with such household and home management functions as budgeting, marketing, housekeeping, cooking, and laundry.

Assists in providing instructional services to selected individuals in such basic techniques of home management as child care, family budgeting, marketing, cooking, sewing, sanitation, personal health, and grooming.

Attends individual and group conferences with the homemaker supervisory staff as required.

Assists in preparing and maintaining case reports for each assignment.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Some knowledge of the materials, methods and practices involved in maintaining a household, including such activities as cooking, laundering, ironing, cleaning, and sewing.

Some knowledge of the methods and techniques of infant and child care and care of the chronically ill and aged.

Ability to participate in a formal and on-the-job training program and to acquire sufficient skill to assist and instruct clients in the fundamentals of home management and child care.

Ability to learn the fundamentals of home management, including family budgeting, the basics of sound nutrition, and the selection and maintenance of clothing, household equipment, and staple supplies.

Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with recipients of homemaker services and associates.

Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.

Ability to read, write, and maintain simple records.

Minimum Experience and Training: Two years of experience in home management, child care, or care of the chronically ill or the aged.
