MAINTENANCE REPAIRMAN 1

Definition: This is semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in the building, mechanical or electrical trades.

An employee in this class works in a variety of trades at the sub-journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of public buildings and equipment. Work involves minor repair jobs of a routine nature, which are carried out with only general supervision, or more advanced work assisting a journeyman trades-man or foreman in regular trades maintenance jobs. Supervision is received from a maintenance engineer, or other supervisor, who assigns work in accordance with the employee's competence, or assigns the employee to assist journeymen tradesmen, and reviews the work by personal inspections and by reports from individuals for whom the work is performed.

Examples of Work: Opens blocked drains; repairs leaky faucets; helps steamfitter to couple or disconnect pipe; cuts and threads pipe.

Replaces bulbs, shades, switches; helps electrician in major electrical maintenance and repair; oils, adjusts and cares for electrical motors.

Builds doors; lays linoleum; makes repairs to floors; takes out and replaces screens and repairs screens as needed; installs broken windows, sash weights; repairs door checks and locks.

Makes minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment, oils and cleans machinery as necessary.

Mixes cement and plaster; helps to lay blocks, bricks and pour cement forms; makes minor plastering repairs.

Paints buildings, rooms, walls or other surfaces as assigned.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in at least two of the building, electrical or mechanical trades.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved.

Ability to use and maintain the tools and equipment of the trades involved.

Ability to perform tasks requiring mechanical aptitude.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Experience and TrainingTwo years of experience in general maintenance work which has involved at least two of the building, electrical or mechanical trades; and such training as may have been gained through completion of the eighth grade in school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
