SECURITY GUARD (Housing)
Definition: This is security work in protecting housing authority tenants and property, and maintaining the security of housing units and offices.
An employee in this class is responsible for patrolling housing authority grounds and buildings to protect and guard property and persons from fire, theft, trespass or other hazards. Work may also include enforcing housing authority parking regulations and escorting employes to the bank. Duties may require the use of a motorized vehicle to conduct patrols. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed rules and procedures. Supervision is received through instructions and inspections as required, or the examination of time clock records.
Examples of Work Performed: Patrols an assigned area of a housing authority; watches for fires, prowlers, vandalism, or other unusual occurrences and takes appropriate action as instructed.
Makes rounds of buildings seeing that office doors and windows are secure and that public entrances are locked at the prescribed time.
Checks vacant units for signs of vandalism and reports to proper authority.
Checks parking areas and tickets illegally parked vehicles.
Reports any malfunctions in heating, electrical, plumbing or other mechanical problems that could endanger the well-being of residents and/or the general public and housing authority property.
Maintains a high visibility profile while on duty to discourage potential problem makers and give residents a sense of security.
Notifies the police department immediately when a situation exists that might be harmful or dangerous to persons on the development site. In other emergencies such as fire, accident or sickness immediately notifies the appropriate specialists (fire department, ambulance, doctor).
Admits locked out tenants after verifying their identity.
Prepares reports of activities.
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of pertinent housing authority rules and regulations.
Knowledge of common building safety practices.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to remain alert at all times while on duty and to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to deal firmly but tactfully with residents and the general public.
Experience and Training: Any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, and abilities.
