LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE (Housing)

 

Definition: This is practical nursing work in the care and treatment of physically ill residents.

An employee in this class performs a variety of practical nursing duties in the care of residents. Work may include performing routine non-professional nursing work. The employee performs duties in accordance with established rules and regulations and specific instructions from professional nurses and/or physicians. Work is reviewed by a professional superior through reports, ward inspections, and observations but employes are expected to perform the more routine duties without detailed instructions.

Examples of Work Performed: Participates in the nursing care of physically ill residents.

Takes and records temperature, pulse, and respiration rate of residents.

Performs routine work in the care of residents, and advise residents of good health habits.

Notes, reports, and records indicative signs and symptoms in the condition of residents.

Assists in planning recreational activities for residents.

Administers ointments and lotions as ordered by a physician.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of practical nursing and ability to apply the more routine nursing techniques.

Some knowledge of the more common physical illnesses, their obvious symptoms, and of the appropriate medical terminology.

Ability to prepare patient reports, and maintain records.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability of maintain a therapeutic attitude toward and effective relationships with physically ill patients.

Experience and Training: Graduation from an approved school of practical nursing;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Necessary Special Requirement: Possession of a current certificate as a licensed practical nurse by written examination, as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners. Individuals who are licensed without examination under the provisions of the Practical Nurse Law, approved March 2, 1956, and as amended, will have met this requirement if they pass a qualifying examination administered by the State Civil Service Commission.
