SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Print Production job series describes work performed in support of print production services.

DEFINITION: This is specialized work that involves the operation of high-speed, production-level digital and/or lithographic presses in an agency centralized print production facility.

An employee in this job is responsible for performing high-volume, on-demand, and variable data production activities to produce high-quality print jobs. Work involves operating commercial, high-speed digital and/or lithographic presses to produce commonwealth agency publications and customized documents; reviewing specifications to prepare jobs for printing; modifying files before production utilizing specialized software; configuring and releasing jobs from the print queue; and monitoring jobs for accuracy and quality of finished products. Work involves utilizing discretion in making necessary equipment and file adjustments to ensure the highest quality product. Work also includes entering activities and status updates into a print management system and ensuring work is completed within scheduled deadlines. An employee in this job may also function as a lead worker for Print Production Operators. Assignments are received with general instructions and are carried out independently. Work is reviewed by a supervisor for overall completion, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Work is differentiated from the lower level by the responsibility for one of the following:

• Independently operating commercial high-speed, digital presses including responsibility for correctly identifying and processing job files and determining the appropriate settings and necessary adjustments to ensure image quality on a variety of substrates.

• Independently operating and maintaining lithographic offset and digital offset presses to include preparing inks, fluids, and chemicals; adjusting settings; and ensuring accurate image reproduction.

• Functioning as a lead worker for Print Production Operators.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Operates high-speed, production-level presses to produce a variety of forms, letters, manuals, brochures, pamphlets, posters, marketing materials, and other documents.

• Completes the preflight process using specialized software to analyze various attributes of digital files and to identify and correct errors or issues associated with fonts, colors, image resolution, and formatting.

• Inspects variable data print jobs to ensure data is printing in the proper format and locations on documents.

• Performs quality assurance/quality control reviews.

• Enters production data into a computerized print management system.

• Performs routine maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs to equipment.

• Ensures job tickets/work orders are completed timely and accurately.

• Functions as a lead worker for Print Production Operator work by assigning and reviewing work, training employees, and performing quality control functions for the work.

• Operates a motor vehicle used to deliver printed publications and materials to various locations.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of office equipment operation.

• Knowledge of the operations and workflow of a print production facility.

• Knowledge of digital equipment and machinery used in print production.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to operate a personal computer.

• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• One year as a Print Production Operator;

or

• One year of experience in the operation of print or mail insertion equipment or similar machinery used in a print or mail production facility;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent.

• Certain positions require one year of experience in the skilled operation of lithographic presses.
