COMPUTER OPERATOR 1
DEFINITION: This is beginning level technical work in operating equipment used in a computer system.
An employee in this class performs routine technical duties in operating a variety of input, output, and external storage devices which are part of an electronic computer system. These devices include magnetic tape equipment, printers, mass storage equipment, optical scanners, visual display equipment, and card readers and punches. The work involves preparing equipment for operation; obtaining, loading, and unloading appropriate magnetic tapes, punch cards, paper, and mass storage components; monitoring machine operation; removing and preparing output for distribution; keeping required records; and performing routine maintenance operation on all equipment. Work may include the operation of a small digital or analog computer during routine production or conversion runs. General supervision and assignments are received from the shift supervisor with the console operator giving specific instructions and directions.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates magnetic tap units, printers, mass storage equipment, optical scanner, visual display equipment, and card readers and punches.
Prepares equipment for operation; obtains, loads, and unloads magnetic taps, punch cards, paper and mass storage devices; and monitors machine operations.
Removes and prepares output for distribution; keeps required records; and performs routine maintenance operation on all equipment.
Operates simple digital or analog computers during routine production or conversion runs.
Participates in formal and on-the-job training.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of computer peripheral equipment operating techniques.
Knowledge of electronic data processing techniques.
Knowledge of basic algebra and numbering systems.
Knowledge of computer operating techniques.
Ability to think in terms of computer logic.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two hundred hours of formal basic data processing training; and graduation from high school or certification of equivalent training.
