SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Unemployment Compensation (UC) Tax Technician job series describes work determining employer tax liability and maintaining employer tax accounts ensuring compliance with UC laws and regulations.
DEFINITION: This is a six-month structured training program designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform technical work in reviewing and maintaining employer accounts for the Office of Unemployment Compensation Tax Services, Department of Labor and Industry.
An employee in this job receives structured and on-the-job training designed to develop understanding and competence in the application of laws relevant to employer UC tax rights and obligations. Work involves maintaining employer UC tax accounts and reviewing employer information to determine the appropriate rate of taxation. Work is performed with greater independence as learning progresses and technical proficiency is achieved. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an Unemployment Compensation Tax Technician Supervisor who reviews work in progress and upon completion for accuracy, quality, and adherence to established standards, policies, and procedures.

• Assists in applying the experience rating provisions of the UC Law to employer accounts.
• Assists in reviewing UC tax credit claims and determining the effect those credits have on the total tax liability.
• Assists in collection of delinquent UC tax liabilities.
• Assists in verifying delinquent payments and in allocating the funds received to penalty, interest, or contribution in the correct quarter.
• Assists in determining and issuing UC tax contribution rates to employers.
• Assists in preparing adjustments to employer UC accounts resulting from a change in entity or ownership, partnership dissolution, merger, or divestiture.
• Assists in establishing and deactivating employer UC accounts to maintain current account status.
• Assists in preparing UC Tax financial statements.
• Receives, researches, and responds to customer inquiries.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, and equipment.
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of customer service.
• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply written information, including laws and regulations.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)
• One year of experience in the maintenance of fiscal or financial records;
or
• One year of customer service experience;
or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
