Work is performed using Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) instruments or conventional drafting techniques and methods for full range drafting and detailing on highway involves plan sheets and involves preparing and checking simple mathematical calculations and reducing field notes preparatory to drafting. Employee may function as a lead worker over lower level technicians preparing simple tracings or straight-line drawings. Work is performed with general instructions received in the form of rough notes or incomplete sketches. As assignments increase in difficulty, more detailed instructions may be received from a higher level technician, designer, or technical supervisor who reviews work upon completion for accuracy and adherence to established standards.

Prepares portions of plans for less complex highway projects such as resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation, lane widening and safety and intersection improvement projects.

Performs and checks less complex computations; assists in the development of grade lines and computes gradients; computes earthwork and material quantities; and plots roadway and channel templates on cross sections with guidance from a higher level technician or professional.

Prepares a variety of maps of the entire state which include such items as railways, bus routes, truck routes, and electric and gas companies' charted territories with guidance from a higher level technician or professional.

Prepares all plans from preliminary sketches to final working plans for highway construction, including right-of-way maps, centerline drawings, profiles and topography, cross sections, drainage, and final construction plans with guidance from a higher level technician or professional.

Prepares soils maps reflecting geographical problem areas, deed plot drawings, viewer plans, and other drawings and charts with guidance from a high level technician or professional.

Applies and interprets survey notes, aerial photographs, and engineering data.

May participate in field trips with project engineers to assist in making measurements, notes, and sketches.

Performs related work as required.
