LANDSCAPE DESIGNER 2

DEFINITION: This is professional and/or lead work in the field of landscape architecture.

An employee in this class prepares landscape designs and specifications in connection with the development of state parks, recreational areas, roadside rests, scenic strips and other landscape projects. Work involves the preparation of master plans, individual development plans and specifications, and the inspection and review of construction projects. Lead work responsibility may be present over professional and technical personnel. Assignments received are usually broad in scope and afford opportunity for originality in the design, planning, and execution of assignments. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed upon completion by a professional superior for adherence to established principles and practices and overall quality.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Designs and drafts layout plans for parks, picnic, roadside rests, and other major recreational projects.

Makes general development studies for new park areas and the expansion or improvement of existing parks.

Lays out park structures, such as swimming pools, lakes, camping areas, roads, parking and picnic areas, trails, and recreational centers.

Prepares preliminary and final design plans for the location, landscaping and construction of roadside rests and scenic overlooks.

Prepares plans, specifications, and cost estimates for contract work.

Inspects project construction; makes recommendations for modification or change.

Coordinates landscape architecture plans with engineering and architectural plans.

Compiles and evaluates statistics and other data related to park planning.

Prepares plans for planting trees, shrubs, vines, and for grading and drainage.

Performs technical review of park and recreation area plans submitted by local governments.

Assists in the development of plans pertaining to water supply, sewage disposal, and electric power lines.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of building architecture.

Knowledge of engineering principles and practices as applied to landscape architecture.

Ability to develop designs of state parks, recreational areas, and other landscape projects.

Ability to review plans and specifications for the construction and maintenance of parks and recreational areas.

Ability to evaluate landscape projects, plan improvements, and compile cost estimates.

Ability to evaluate data related to the need and size of parks and recreational areas.

Ability to plan and oversee the various phases of park and recreational area planning and development.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A bachelor's degree with major course work in landscape architecture from an accredited college or university; and two years of experience in the practice of landscape architecture;

Eight years of experience in the practice of landscape architecture.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Certain positions in this class will require licensure as a landscape architect by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, or a reciprocal jurisdiction. These are positions where there can be no exemption from such licensure, as defined under Section 8, Exemption from Licensure and Registration, of the Landscape Architects' Registration Law (as revised).
