TRAFFIC CONTROL SPECIALIST

DEFINITION: This is technical work in a traffic control engineering program.

An employee in this class performs technical duties involving the analysis of traffic control problem resolutions within general traffic engineering criteria; develops recommendations for operational efficiency to other organizations for newly developed traffic control program areas; and trains traffic control, construction, municipal, and contractor personnel in modern traffic control criteria and devices. Work is performed with considerable independence, with objectives being established by a technical manager who reviews work upon completion for adherence to traffic engineering principles.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Prepares and/or reviews special provisions for maintenance and protection of traffic contracts for highway and bridge projects.

Performs a technical review of high traffic volume highway occupancy permit applications, such as shopping centers.

Reviews data, prepares justifications, and develops traffic control signal systems for multiple traffic problem areas.

Performs a statewide inspection of maintenance and protection of traffic sites for adherence to departmental regulations.

Reviews and recommends improvements for existing signal systems in high traffic volume areas.

Writes specifications for the necessary equipment and materials to complete signal installations according to state standards.

Prepares initial alternatives to resolve hazardous accident areas, and designs the safety improvement project proposals, for high traffic volume hazardous locations.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of traffic control.

Knowledge of the techniques and procedures involved in investigating, researching, and analyzing highway traffic control problems.

Knowledge of traffic control devices and their utilization in effectively controlling traffic, including their use in intersections having multiple signals.

Knowledge of highway design and construction as related to traffic control.

Knowledge of algebra and plane geometry.

Knowledge of roadway capacity as related to traffic control.

Ability to conduct a variety of comprehensive traffic control studies and surveys, and to analyze and compile technical data into clear, concise reports.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Traffic Control Specialist Trainee;

                                                                                                                                                            or

Two years as a Traffic Control Technician;

                                                                                                                                                           or

One year of experience in traffic control work; and a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics, civil engineering, or a closely related field;

                                                                                                                                                          or

An equivalent combination of experience and training.
