ROADSIDE TECHNICIAN 2
DEFINITION: This is technical work in the development and maintenance of roadside grounds and rest area construction or maintenance.
An employee in this class performs structured assignments in the planning and execution of a variety of roadside activities such as preparing contracts for herbicide spraying, inspecting roadside maintenance areas, investigating complaints from the public on roadside programs, and assisting in landscape or roadside design projects in an engineering district office; or performs technical duties relative to the roadside programs as an assistant to the roadside program manager in the central office by compiling and analyzing data on statewide programs and administering statewide roadside material and services contracts. Significant aspects of this work include maintaining liaison with district construction and maintenance personnel within an engineering district, or maintaining liaison with district roadside personnel from the central office. Work is reviewed by an administrative or technical supervisor in progress and upon completion for adherence to standards and the application of sound judgment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Assists in the preparation of specifications of moderate complexity related to roadside development, construction, design and maintenance activities.
Assists in the preparation of cost estimates, plans, and bid proposals for contracts on assigned projects.
Participates in field inspection of roadside rest areas.
Inspects the work performed by contractors and Department employees for grass mowing, pesticide application, and tree trimming and removal to ensure work is consistent with contract agreement and program objectives.
Assists the statewide roadside coordinator in compiling and analyzing information pertaining to the selection of herbicide materials for department wide use.
Coordinates contracting and information dissemination on the department's water and wastewater testing program for roadside rests.
Reviews and updates department publications and handbooks on roadside related programs.
Performs review functions over district contracts for seeding and mulching, mowing, herbicide spraying, refuse disposal, privy vault cleaning, electrical, plumbing, and maintenance contracts for roadside rests.
Provides county roadside development coordinators with technical advice and assistance pertaining to the planning, development, and maintenance of roadsides and related service contracts.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of those phases of landscape architecture, forestry, plant ecology, entomology, and horticulture which apply to soil erosion control.
Knowledge of the relationship of various landscaping and erosion control principles and practices.
Ability to learn to interpret and explain those aspects of highway construction plans and specifications pertaining to roadside development activities.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Ability to perform basic mathematics including addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, percentages, and ratios.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Roadside Technician 1.
or
One year experience in technical landscaping or roadside development activities and an Associate's Degree in agricultural, forestry, landscape technology, or a related field.
or
Two years of experience in technical landscaping, roadside development, or soil conservation work; and graduation from high school.
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
