ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER TRAINEE

DEFINITION: This is entrance level training work to develop practical proficiency in the use of architectural knowledges, skills, and abilities.

Employees in this class participate in an on-the-job training program under the supervision of professional architects. Assignments are designed to develop the employee's ability to apply the knowledges and skills of the architectural profession; increase the employee's ability to identify and define problems early in project development; and develop solutions, which conform to agency policies, rules and regulations, and professional standards. Work may include assignments in different organizational units of the agency to increase the employee's awareness of the scope of architecture practiced in the Commonwealth and ensure final job placement. Work is screened prior to assignment, reviewed while in progress and upon completion for proper method of approach, technical accuracy and completeness of project by an Architectural Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates in an on-the-job training program designed to develop practical proficiency in the use of architectural skills and abilities.

Assists in developing plans for renovations and alterations to existing buildings and structures; and in determining the costs of architectural features incorporated in the construction and renovation of buildings and structures. Drafts plans, elevations, perspectives, and other routine projects for the review of, and to assist, an Architectural Supervisor.

Assists in creating design drawings for Commonwealth buildings and structures using Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software and manual drafting techniques.

Assists in checking shop drawings, catalogue cuts, and sources of supply for compliance with contract specifications.

Assists in reviewing architectural portions of designs prepared by Architectural Consultants.

Assists in the inspection of existing state buildings to determine the potential for remodeling.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of architectural design.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of construction and construction cost estimating.

Knowledge of algebra, plane and solid geometry, and plane trigonometry.

Ability to assist in architectural design and the selection of materials in an efficient, technically sound and cost effective manner.

Ability to read and interpret civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering drawings and specifications used in the design and construction of architectural projects.

Ability to read and interpret inspection and testing reports; and prepare technical field investigation reports.

Ability to draft manually and to operate a micro-station Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system.

Ability to read and interpret Federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and standards applicable to the design or construction of architectural projects.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, consultants, contractors, government officials, and the general public.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural engineering or a closely related field which included major course work in architectural design;
