JOB TITLE: AIR MONITORING PROGRAM SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION: This is supervisory work in the statewide air monitoring program in the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). An employee in this job supervises a staff of professional and technical employees engaged in ambient air monitoring, air toxics monitoring, and local air monitoring studies. Work involves supervising technical field repair work, bench repair work, and operation of the central station data collection system. Work also involves reviewing computer-generated data to ensure proper functioning of air monitoring systems; reviewing preventative and corrective maintenance tasks to ensure proper procedures are being followed in the operation and maintenance of air monitoring systems; recommending changes to field repairs and troubleshooting procedures on air monitoring systems; and evaluating trends in equipment bench repair to identify system wide issues. Work includes participating in the planning, development, and evaluation of the statewide air monitoring program. Work is performed independently and reviewed upon completion by an administrative supervisor for attainment of goals and objectives, adherence to established standards, completeness, and quality.

• Supervises Air Monitoring Equipment Specialists and Air Quality Specialists assigned to the statewide air monitoring program.

• Reviews computer-generated data to ensure proper functioning of air monitoring systems.

• Reviews preventative and corrective maintenance tasks to ensure proper procedures are being followed in the operation and maintenance of air monitoring systems.

• Recommends changes to field repair and troubleshooting procedures on air monitoring systems to management.

• Recommends bench repair procedures on air monitoring systems to management.

• Maintains equipment, spare parts, and supplies needed for the proper operation and maintenance of air monitoring systems including initiating purchase orders.

• Assists and advises air monitoring program managers on program planning strategies.

• Travels to field sites to oversee the maintenance and repair of air monitoring systems.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• An employee in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates' work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of ambient air monitoring, air toxics monitoring, and air monitoring studies.

• Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of air monitoring and data acquisition equipment.

• Knowledge of the properties of various carrier and calibration gases.

• Knowledge of the procedures and techniques utilized in installing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining air monitoring sensors and equipment.

• Knowledge of calibration standards.

• Knowledge of the standard diagnostic tools of electronic repair.

• Knowledge of the safety precautions required while working with gases and electricity.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to perform mathematical calculations.

• Ability to read and interpret schematics, flow charts, and diagrams.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Four years of experience as an Air Monitoring Equipment Specialist (Commonwealth title);

or

• One year of experience as an Air Quality Specialist (Commonwealth title) in the air monitoring program;

or

• Six years of technical experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of air monitoring and data acquisition equipment;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.
