DEFINITION:

This is professional education work in providing vocational instruction in a building trade/construction occupation area to inmates at a state correctional institution.

An employee in this job is responsible for developing and adapting curriculum, course outlines, lesson plans, and instructional methodology in teaching vocational education courses in a specialized building trade/construction occupation area for inmates at a state correctional facility. Work involves separating known trade or vocational skills into teaching units to provide organized individual and group instruction to inmates involving both theory and practical job skills training. Duties include diagnosing and evaluating inmate potential, achievement, and progress by administering standardized and teacher constructed tests and grading inmate progress in both theory and occupational competency. Work involves responsibility for monitoring inmate behavior and maintaining an effective learning environment in the classroom and shop area; maintaining security of instructional materials; and complete records, reports, and forms related to the operation of classes and the evaluation of inmate performance. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrator or principal with work review through conferences and observation for achievement of educational objectives.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Prepares instructional objectives that will achieve the goals of the Planned Educational Program.

Writes individualized lesson plans and course outlines for teaching one of a variety of vocational education subjects.

Adapts the vocational education curriculum materials to meet the individualized needs of incarcerated adults.

Teaches processes, methods, and practices to students through lectures, demonstrations, and class discussions.

Teaches safety precautions common to the particular vocational subject taught.

Conducts related training classes.

Trains and supervises inmate assistants for a tutorial environment.

Measures learning progress of and ranks trainees through oral, written, and performance tests.

Maintains attendance and learning records for students.

Disciplines disruptive students by taking appropriate corrective action.

Prepares requests for equipment, materials, and supplies within constraints of the annual budget.

Completes reports and maintains records on inventory assigned to the inmates and instructional area.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the current methods, equipment, and materials used in the trade or occupational area taught.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions common to the subject taught.

Ability to learn the instructional strategies, techniques, methods and approaches used in teaching specific trade or vocational subjects at the adult level.

Ability to design curriculums, course outlines, lesson plans, and individualized learning plans for incarcerated individuals.

Ability to instruct inmates in the vocational or trade area taught.

Ability to supervise incarcerated persons in a classroom or shop environment or other area.

Ability to evaluate the performance and progress of inmates through work assignments, tests, and observations.

Ability to administer and interpret various standardized aptitude and proficiency tests.

Ability to complete learning records for individuals and other reports and forms.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, other teachers, counselors, supervisors, security personnel, and other staff.

Ability to learn and adhere to the security rules and security regulations established by the state correctional institution and the department.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Education equivalent to high school graduation and two years wage earning experience beyond the completed apprenticeship period in the specified parenthetical;

If there is no approved apprenticeship period for the specified parenthetical, education equivalent to high school graduation and three years of wage earning experience in the specified parenthetical.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of or eligibility for a current Pennsylvania Department of Education Vocational Certificate I or II for the specified parenthetical;

                                                                                                                                                     or

Possession of or eligibility for a current Pennsylvania Department of Education Vocational Intern Certificate for the specified parenthetical;

                                                                                                                                                    or

Eligibility for a Pennsylvania Department of Education Emergency Certificate for the specified parenthetical.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employees who are teaching school age youth must maintain the minimum teaching certification for the specified parenthetical as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education's current regulations.
