JOB TITLE: BUSINESS OCCUPATIONS TEACHER, CORRECTION EDUCATION

DEFINITION: This is professional education work in providing instruction in business occupations to inmates at a state correctional institution.
An employee in this job is responsible for developing and adapting curriculum, course outlines, lesson plans, and instructional methodology in teaching education courses in specialized business occupations for inmates at a state correctional facility. Work involves separating known skills into teaching units to provide organized individual and group instruction to inmates involving both theory and practical job skills training. Work includes diagnosing and evaluating inmate potential, achievement, and progress by administering standardized and teacher-constructed tests and grading inmate progress in both theory and occupational competency; monitoring inmate behavior to ensure an effective learning environment in the classroom; maintaining security of instructional materials; and completing records, reports, and forms related to the operation of classes and the evaluation of inmate performance. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrator or principal, and is reviewed through conferences and observation for achievement of educational objectives.

• Prepares instructional objectives that will achieve the goals of the Planned Educational Program.
• Prepares individualized lesson plans and course outlines for teaching one of a variety of education subjects.
• Adapts education curriculum materials to meet the individualized needs of inmates.
• Teaches business occupation processes, methods, and practices to students through lectures, demonstrations, and class discussions.
• Trains and supervises inmate assistants for a tutorial environment.
• Measures learning progress of trainees through oral, written, and performance tests.
• Maintains inmate attendance and learning records.
• Establishes classroom rules and procedures and maintains order in class.
• Prepares requests for equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Completes reports and maintains records on inventory assigned to the inmates, classroom, and the school.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of teaching principles and practices.
• Knowledge of methods used to develop business education curricula, course outlines, lesson plans, and individual learning plans.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.):
• A bachelor's degree in business, education, business education, or a related business education field, which included or is supplemented by successful completion of either student teaching or a teaching practicum, in a business-related subject approved by the degree granting institution or one year of classroom instruction experience in a business-related subject.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Employees assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility must possess a valid and active Instructional 1 or 2 certification in Business Computer Information and Technology (BCIT) or Business Education (Accounting, Data Processing, Marketing, Office Technology, Secretarial or Typewriting) issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. When no candidates possess the named certifications, the candidate must be eligible for an Emergency Permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that is appropriate to the position.
• An employee assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility who was hired based on eligibility for an Emergency Permit must obtain a valid and active Instructional Level 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
