SECOND MATE, FLAGSHIP NIAGARA

DEFINITION: This is specialized navigation and piloting work in the operation of the United States Brig Niagara.

The Second Mate functions as the assistant executive officer responsible for the safe navigation and movement of the vessel. Duties include piloting the ship through the use of manual and electronic navigation equipment, conning of the ship when under sail or diesel power, training the ship's professional and volunteer crew which includes conducting drills and providing demonstrations of various tasks, and providing interpretive instruction to the public and the crew regarding square-rigged sailing vessels, maritime history, and the Brig Niagara's role in the War of 1812. When performing all-hands evolutions, the Second Mate is responsible for a mast or section of the crew. The Second Mate assumes command of the ship in the absence of the Captain and Chief Mate. Lead work is exercised over the professional and volunteer crew. Work is performed under the general direction of a supervisory officer.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Uses manual, celestial, and electronic navigational equipment such as compass and LORAN to pilot the ship.

Operates all engine room equipment including diesel propulsion engines, generator, pumps, and battery banks.

Gets the ship underway from anchorage or dock.

Takes and plots anchor bearings.

Cons the ship under sail or power.

Conducts drills and training exercises.

Assists with interpretive programs and presenting the ship in port.

Sets up standing rigging, ties basic and advanced knots, and adjusts footrope lashings.

Runs the jibboom in and out, crosses yards and sends them down, sends T'gallant masts up and down.

Leads work parties as assigned by a ship's officer, takes charge of sail handling, and oversees line handling at pinrails for maneuvers.

Launches life rafts and takes charge of rafts.

Rigs awnings, brows and fenders, battens hatches, rigs anchor lights and day shapes, cats and fishes anchor, and starts all the ship's pumping systems.

Performs related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of navigational techniques and use of equipment.

Knowledge of the operation of 500 ton class sail vessels.

Knowledge in the maintenance of wooden ships and traditional rigging.

Knowledge of maritime history and square-rigged vessels.

Knowledge of the history of the Brig Niagara and its role in the War of 1812.

Knowledge of man-overboard recovery procedures.

Knowledge of anchor handling and mooring.

Knowledge of the duties of lookout, anchor watch, and gangway watch.

Ability to train individuals in the duties of apprentice Deckhand and Ordinary Seaman as defined in the Niagara Crew Manual.

Ability to lead others in the performance of sailing tasks.

Ability to conduct tours and speak before large groups of people.

Ability to clearly and effectively communicate commands to both novice and experienced crew members.

Ability to launch and recover boats from the ship's davits.

Ability to maneuver a boat under oar or engine power.

Ability to swim at least 200 yards.

Ability to climb a rope hand-over-hand for at least ten feet.

Ability to prime and use deck bilge pumps.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years command experience aboard sailing ships of 100 ton rating or greater.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a United States Coast Guard Radar Observer Endorsement, and a United States Coast Guard Marine Firefighting Certificate.
