JOB TITLE: VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION INSTRUCTOR, APPLIED GENERAL EDUCATION

DEFINITION: This is professional education work providing applied general education instruction in the occupational associate degree and non-degree programs at the Department of Labor and Industry’s Commonwealth Technical Institute at the Hiram G. Andrews Center.
An employee in this job educates students in applied general education subjects related to a technical or occupational field. Work involves separating general education skills of a specific technical or occupational field into teaching units to provide organized individual and group instruction in a physical, virtual, or online environment. Work includes researching, developing, evaluating, and adapting courses of study and lesson plans and presenting educational materials using a variety of applications, equipment, and techniques to accommodate students with disabilities. Work also includes evaluating student potential, working toward established Individual Plans for Employment, and integrating activities with other facility disciplines to provide comprehensive student services. Supervision is provided by a Vocational Rehabilitation Instructor Supervisor through observation, directives, meetings, and ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness.

• Provides applied general education instruction to students on an individual or group basis as part of a specific technical or occupational curriculum.
• Researches, develops, and evaluates methods for adapting equipment and techniques to accommodate students with disabilities.
• Develops curriculum materials and teaching techniques and strategies to attain optimal results with students.
• Prepares and adapts instructional activities to meet the needs of students with special learning requirements.
• Develops and maintains accurate records on student progress, attendance, and related information.
• Assists supervisory and administrative staff in developing, implementing, and evaluating new programs.
• Maintains knowledge of industry standards to ensure program curricula, equipment, and other instructional materials remain current and meet industry standards.
• Uses current technology and teaching techniques and strategies to provide instruction in physical, virtual, and online environments.
• Collaborates with other facility disciplines to provide comprehensive and person-centered service delivery to students.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the applied general education principles in the specialty areas to be taught.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions common to the specialty areas to be taught.
• Knowledge of current principles and practices of vocational education and developing comprehensive educational plans.
• Knowledge of person-centered approaches to service delivery.
• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.
• Ability to design curricula, course outlines, lesson plans, and individualized learning plans for students.
• Ability to instruct students in the specialty area to be taught.
• Ability to evaluate the performance and progress of students through work assignments, assessments, and observation.
• Ability to prepare, administer, and score various assessments.
• Ability to complete learning records, reports, and other documentation on students being taught.
• Ability to recognize the need for accommodations and adaptions, and to develop and adapt methods, equipment, materials, and instructional techniques to accommodate students' special needs.
• Ability to organize and promote a positive learning environment and to maintain discipline and order.
• Ability to implement safety precautions in the learning environment.
• Ability to perform research and develop new course materials and techniques.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)
• A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 15 credits is the subject area being taught;
or
• Eight years of related practical work experience and a minimum of 15 credits of college level coursework in the subject area taught.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Certain positions require an educational background equal to or exceeding the maximum credential offered in that program.
• Certain positions require an active license or credential as determined by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
