CORRECTIONS MAIL INSPECTOR SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION: This is supervisory specialized clerical work in the inspection and processing of mail in a state correctional institution or facility.

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising the examination of packages, periodicals, and letters addressed to and from inmates to identify and
prevent the transmission of restricted mail and contraband material. Work involves supervising a staff of mail inspectors and clerical personnel engaged in
the inspection of inmate mail and the operation of a central mail room for the processing of institution business mail. Employee is expected to treat mail
information confidentially and exercise independent judgment regarding the application of current standards and guidelines used in identifying prohibited
items. Work performance is evaluated by an administrative superior through inspections, conferences, reports, and effectiveness of results.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises and participates in the examination of inmate letters and packages to prevent transmission of contraband material and
restricted correspondence with inmates of other institutions, ex-inmates, victims of inmate's criminal acts, and with other addressees on a restricted list.

Supervises and participates in the inspection and examination of magazines, periodicals, and books for contraband and for adherence with Department policies and procedures.

Reports restricted letters and packages containing contraband material to the Deputy Superintendent for further inspection and disposition determination.

Processes incoming and outgoing privileged correspondence unopened in accordance with agency regulations.

Interprets, for subordinates, the rules, regulations, policies, standards, and objectives for the processing of inmate mail and business mail in a state correctional institution or facility.

Supervises and participates in removal and recording of money orders, certified checks, cash, and transmits daily receipts to Inmate Account Section for deposit in individual accounts and returns personal checks to sender.

Supervises and participates in sorting of mail, wrapping and addressing packages, operation of scales, postage metering machine, and other equipment, pick-up and delivery, and related work in processing of incoming and outgoing inmate mail and institution business mail.

Maintains a record of postage free and paid postage letters mailed each month by inmates, itemized content of all packages, and other information relative to
general operation of a central mail room in a state correctional institution or facility.

Operates standard office and postal equipment.

Operates hand-held metal detectors, x-ray machines and other scanning devices to examine mail for contraband.

Plans, organizes, and assigns work, prepares work schedules, and evaluates employee work performance.

Receives and resolves or recommends resolution to grievances and complaints.

Employees in this class may participate in the performance of their subordinates' work consistent with operational or organizational requirements.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of correctional institution administrative procedures and practices as they relate to corrections mail inspection function.

Knowledge of office procedures, practices, and equipment.

Knowledge of agency regulations for the processing of inmate mail and U.S. Postal Service regulations relating to all classes of mail.

Ability to plan, organize, evaluate, and supervise the work of subordinates.

Ability to operate and instruct others to operate postal processing and office equipment such as postage meters, scales, calculator, letter openers, typewriter, etc.

Ability to operate and instruct others to operate scanning devices, such as hand- held metal detectors and x-ray machines, etc.

Ability to make duty oriented decisions and to treat acquired information confidentially.

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations such as adding and subtracting of whole numbers and decimals; and multiplying and dividing whole numbers or decimal multipliers and divisors.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year experience as a Corrections Mail Inspector;

Three years clerical experience, including two years in the field of corrections;

                                                                                                                                          or

Any combination of experience and/or training which provides the Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities.
