ENTOMOLOGIST 2

DEFINITION: This is advanced professional work in the field of entomology in a field and laboratory setting.

An employee in this job performs advanced entomology work in the areas of laboratory analysis, field survey, quarantine, pest management, and identification. Work includes the design and implementation of one or more of the following: life or seasonal history studies; qualitative, quantitative, or detection surveys for pests or potential pests; or pest management strategies or systems. Work may involve providing guidance to a group of technicians and lower-level professionals as they carry out studies, surveys, and inspections. Work is differentiated from the Entomologist 1 by having independent responsibility for developing studies and establishing survey protocols. Work is performed independently but is subject to periodic review through written and oral reports and direct observation.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Designs and carries out insect surveys to determine presence, distribution, population levels, and host range of pests or potential pests.

Develops identification guides and pest control recommendations.

Designs and conducts studies of life or seasonal histories of insects, including their parasites and predators, habits, reproduction cycles, and modes of dispersal.

Prepares and provides reports of survey or identification work to members of the scientific community, other state or federal agencies, and others.

Represents the Department on interagency or multi-organization task forces, workgroups and meetings held by professional societies related to entomology issues.

Trains industry and Departmental personnel on pest identification, pest management strategies, and pest survey/detection issues.

Trains lower-level technical employees in inspection of apiaries for bee diseases, parasites, and presence of Africanized bees.

Receives and responds to public concerns regarding pest control problems.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and practices of entomology and related fields including methods and procedures used to manage bee diseases, parasites, and undesirable bee strains.

Knowledge of pest management methods and procedures used to control plant pests.

Knowledge of scientific research, techniques, and procedures used in the identification of insects, mites, arthropods, and other potential pest invertebrates.

Knowledge of the methods used to compile, analyze and report technical data.

Knowledge in the use of taxonomic keys for insect and arthropod identification.

Ability to use laboratory equipment for insect and arthropod identification.

Ability to interpret state and federal rules and regulations governing the control of insects and parasites infecting plant life or apiaries.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year experience as an Entomologist 1;

                                                                                                                                                                  or

One year of professional laboratory or field experience in entomology, and a bachelor’s degree that includes 15 credits in entomology, horticulture, forestry, or related agricultural or entomology subjects;

                                                                                                                                                                  or

A graduate degree in Entomology.
