SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Game Lands Maintenance Worker series describes work in the development, construction, and maintenance of wildlife habitat areas and related infrastructure for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

DEFINITION: This is skilled construction trades and equipment operation work on state game lands and on private lands under cooperative agreements.

An employee in this job performs a variety of journey level tasks in the development and maintenance of wildlife habitat areas and in the construction, repair, and maintenance of related facilities and infrastructure. Work requires proficiency in several trades, which may include carpentry, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, masonry, and welding. Work also requires the skilled operation of construction and agricultural equipment and the operation of truck-trailer combinations to transport equipment to remote job sites. Work includes performing various agricultural, habitat improvement, and groundskeeping tasks that may require the application of pesticides. Work also includes communicating with private land owners to explain and enlist their participation in the agency’s public access and habitat assistance programs. Work is assigned in the form of specific objectives and is performed with considerable independence. Work is reviewed through reports and on-site inspections.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

     • Work is differentiated from the next lower level by the operation of truck-trailer combinations requiring a Class A Commercial Driver’s License to transport construction equipment to work locations; the proficient application of journey level skills across multiple construction trades; and the responsibility to lead work crews on assigned projects.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Develops, maintains, and improves wildlife habitat through a variety of food and cover projects such as border cuts, browse cuts, hedgerow and shrub pruning, fruit tree pruning and daylighting, timber stand cuts, seedling planting, crop planting and rotation, seed collection, stream bank fencing, wetland or grassland restoration, and mowing.

• Performs skilled trades work in the construction and maintenance of various infrastructure projects such as roads, buildings, trails, parking lots, bridges, shooting ranges, nesting structures, signs, gates, fences, water impoundments, and drainage culverts.

• Utilizes and maintains a wide range of tools and equipment such as chainsaws, hand and power tools, mowers, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, sprayers, and welding equipment.

• Operates a wide variety of heavy construction equipment, including dump trucks, tilt bed trucks, bulldozers, front loaders, and backhoes.

• Operates a truck-trailer combination with a combined gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more to transport heavy construction equipment with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds to work locations.

• Participates in prescribed fire operations.

• Applies pesticides to control weeds and invasive species for habitat improvement, agricultural, and facility maintenance purposes.

• Leads work crews on construction and maintenance projects as assigned.

• Meets with property owners and sporting organizations to promote public access programs.

• Assists at check station operations, handles animal specimens and carcasses, and performs animal tagging or marking.

• Participates on survey crews to develop, maintain, or reestablish boundary lines.

• Operates mobile electronic devices including global positioning system units and tablet computers.

• Operates a computer with standard office applications for communications, record keeping, mapping, and related purposes.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the tools, methods, materials, and practices used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of wildlife management facilities and habitat.

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in maintenance, repair, and construction work.

• Knowledge of tree species and woody plants, crops and crop rotation, seeds and seed planting, soil erosion, forestry practices, and farming practices as applied to wildlife habitat management and food plot development.

• Knowledge of pesticide application for agricultural purposes and for the control of invasive species.

• Knowledge of the use of global positioning system units and related electronic surveying equipment.

• Knowledge of the laws pertaining to the safe operation of vehicles on highways.

• Ability to operate motor vehicles, including a truck-trailer combination with a combined gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more to transport construction equipment with a gross vehicle weight rating over 10,000 pounds.

• Ability to use and maintain the tools and equipment of the building, electrical, mechanical, and construction trades.

• Ability to interpret sketches and diagrams of work plans.

• Ability to use a personal computer and Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• One year as a Game Lands Maintenance Worker 1;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

• All positions require possession of an active Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
