SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The custodial job series describes cleaning and sanitation work.

DEFINITION: This is supervisory and custodial work for state operated facilities.

An employee in this job supervises staff performing standard or aseptic cleaning and sanitation work. Work involves supervising positions responsible for cleaning buildings, gathering waste and recyclable materials, and using and maintaining custodial supplies and cleaning equipment. Work may involve supervising a lead worker over cleaning and sanitation staff. An important aspect of this work involves ensuring efficiency in the custodial unit’s work processes and recommending improvements that meet operational needs. Work is performed under the general direction of a custodial services manager or administrative supervisor, and is reviewed through personal conferences, reports, observation, and quality of completed work.

   DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

• Work is differentiated from the lower level jobs by the responsibility for supervising custodial work.

• Supervises staff responsible for standard or aseptic cleaning and sanitation work.

• Plans, organizes, and assigns work to staff based on facility priorities.

• Trains staff on the proper use of cleaning equipment, chemicals, and safety precautions.

• Develops, evaluates, modifies, and implements operational standards and procedures for custodial services.

• Inspects work performed by staff to ensure it meets established standards.

• Prepares, submits, and maintains records that document attendance and work performed.

• Identifies requirements and recommends ordering equipment and supplies.

• Determines proper storage methods for custodial equipment and supplies.

• Recommends maintenance and repair work to buildings, furnishings, and equipment.

• Performs the full range of supervisory duties.

• An employee in this job may participate in the performance of subordinates’ work consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in custodial work.

• Knowledge of aseptic and sanitation materials hazards and safety guidelines.

• Ability to read and understand written materials.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• One year as a Custodial Worker 2 (commonwealth title);

or

• Two years of experience performing custodial work.
