CONSTRUCTION FOREMAN

DEFINITION: This is technical supervisory work in directing a group of workers engaged in construction and reconstruction work.

An employee on this class lays out and directs the work of skilled tradesmen, equipment operators, mechanics, semi-skilled laborers, laborers and inmate help, occasionally doing highly skilled phases of the work himself. The emphasis requirement is the ability to supervise assigned workers in the efficient accomplishment of a construction of reconstruction job. Work assigned and received in the form of verbal orders or written plans and instruction. Work is checked in progress and upon completion by engineers or construction superintendents.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: Instructs and assigns work to, and supervises workers in a variety of tasks concerned with constructing buildings, cement walks, dams, park furnishings, fish hatcheries, ponds, and flood control projects.

Supervises operation of light and heavy equipment used on construction, reconstruction, or maintenance jobs.

Keeps and approves time records and make reports.

Estimates and orders needed materials and supplies for assigned projects.

Reads rough sketches and blueprints of work to be performed.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used on construction and reconstruction work.

Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and safety rules pertaining to operation of all equipment used in construction work.

Ability to use and instruct personnel in the use of construction tools and equipment.

Ability to plan work, make work assignments, and supervise a variety of tradesman so as to obtain maximum efficiency.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.

Ability to read construction plans and blueprints.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Five years experience as a lead worker or tradesman in construction work, including some experience in the operation of automotive equipment and light and heavy construction equipment; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from a standard high school or vocational school, including courses in mathematics; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
