JOB TITLE: TRANSPORTATION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR TRAINEE

SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Transportation Equipment Operator job series describes work in the operation of equipment used for highway and bridge maintenance and construction.
DEFINITION: This is trainee work in the operation of highway construction and maintenance equipment along with the performance of manual and unskilled work.
An employee in this job participates in a formal six-month training program to become proficient in the operation of various pieces of construction and maintenance equipment. Work also involves the performance of general laboring duties including the use of hand and power tools on highway maintenance and construction projects when equipment operation training is not being conducted during the six-month period. Training assignments are closely monitored to ensure the employee can be developed into a proficient and safe equipment operator.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):
• Receives on-the-job training in the operation and maintenance of construction and maintenance equipment to become a proficient and safe operator of at least two pieces of equipment, usually a truck and loader.
• Receives training in making minor adjustments and repairs to equipment, cleaning and servicing equipment, and maintaining equipment operation records.
• Drives an automobile or light truck to obtain, transport, and deliver equipment parts, equipment, or personnel to the garage area or construction site.
• Drives a light truck at the construction site to tow portable equipment and transport personnel, equipment parts, and equipment including sign boards.
• Performs manual laboring duties, such as cleaning culverts, erecting, repairing, and painting guardrails, cutting grass, erecting and tearing down snow fences, digging ditches, and burning brush.
• Performs related work as required.
ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the laws pertaining to the safe operation of vehicles on roadways.
• Ability to operate motor vehicles.
• Ability to interpret written information.
• Ability to interpret and follow instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
• All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
• All positions require employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations by the first day of work.
• Certain positions in this job require employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
