EQUIPMENT OPERATOR B

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the operation of specialized equipment and/or vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more.

An employee in this class also performs manual work when not operating equipment. Work involves active participation in equipment maintenance duties and performance of related work of both an unskilled and skilled nature. Work is assigned with general instructions on a project basis, and employees proceed independently in the operation of the equipment without further instruction or assistance.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates specialized equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, high-lifts or front end loaders with a bucket capacity of three cubic yards or more which are used in general construction, maintenance or grounds work, including snow removal and cindering operations, as needed.

Operates vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more, such as tankers and tractor trailers which are used in general construction, maintenance or grounds work, including snow removal and cindering operations, as needed.

Performs manual work on assigned projects when not operating equipment, including the loading and unloading of trucks.

Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance work, or assists automotive mechanics making major repairs to equipment.

Completes safety checks and inspections of equipment prior to operation and maintains records of operated equipment including those of commercial vehicles exceeding 32,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, as appropriate.

Demonstrates the operation of assigned equipment to other employees.

Performs other related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the techniques, methods and practices applied to the care and safe operation of specialized equipment, trucks and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more utilized at this level.

Knowledge of the principles of operation of motor equipment sufficient to detect defective operation and to learn to make minor repairs.

Knowledge of the state and federal laws pertaining to the operation of equipment upon highways.

Skill in the operation of assigned equipment.

Ability to check, inspect, service and make running adjustments and minor repairs to equipment.

Ability to use hand power tools safely and properly.

Ability to perform related clerical tasks and to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 

Ability to exhibit sufficient physical strength to lift heavy objects and work under adverse weather conditions.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience as an Equipment Operator A;

Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction and specialized maintenance equipment used at this level with a gross vehicle weight of 32,001 pounds or more:

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid Class C Pennsylvania driver's license.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Certain positions require that employees in this class have a commercial driver's license (CDL) and any endorsements required to operate specific equipment, in order to meet operational needs.
