JOB TITLE: DIESEL AND CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

DEFINITION: This is skilled journey-level work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of construction equipment and diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles.

An employee in this job is responsible for the performance of highly skilled tasks in the diagnosis and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and construction equipment, such as heavy trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, excavators, pavers, rollers, chippers, and oil distributors. Work involves analyzing and troubleshooting diesel fuel system problems and repairing or replacing diesel fuel systems and fuel system components. Work may also involve providing guidance to other mechanics and garage support personnel. Work is performed independently and reviewed by a higher level supervisor for quality and efficiency of the repair tasks completed.

• Repairs, rebuilds, and replaces worn or broken parts of construction equipment and vehicles, such as heavy trucks, graders, backhoes, front end loaders, excavators, pavers, rollers, chippers, and oil distributors.

• Tests and troubleshoots gasoline engine and fuel system problems to diagnose the cause of failure.

• Repairs, overhauls, and performs related work on gasoline and diesel-powered engines and construction equipment.

• Identifies and recommends the ordering of repair parts.

• Diagnoses problems and repairs, and replaces shock absorbers, transmissions, hour meters, clutches, brakes, exhaust and emission systems, and other parts.

• Balances wheels and checks for proper alignment, makes minor body repairs, and tests and repairs or replaces alternators and electrical components on vehicles and equipment as appropriate.

• Implements preventative maintenance program activities on vehicles, construction equipment, and parts by performing mechanical diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes; repairing and replacing engine sub-assemblies; repairing and adjusting the cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, and air-conditioning components; and maintaining fuel, brake, steering, exhaust and emission components, and power train components.

• Repairs or rebuilds construction or shop equipment.

• Performs the full range of diagnostic and mechanical work on construction equipment to include electrical systems, electronic module systems, and hydraulic systems and controls.

• Inspects power driven vehicles that travel the public highways for compliance with state regulations.

• Operates motor vehicles and equipment.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the laws pertaining to the safe repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used for highway and bridge maintenance and construction.

• Knowledge of the problems caused through use and malfunction in the diesel and gasoline engine fuel systems and the required methods, procedures, and techniques in diagnosis and troubleshooting.

• Knowledge of automotive vehicles, equipment, and parts, and the standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the diesel and automotive mechanic trade.

• Knowledge of troubleshooting and diagnostic practices used in diesel injection pumps and injectors.

• Knowledge of the hazard and safety precautions of the mechanic trade.

• Knowledge of internal combustion engine repair and maintenance.

• Knowledge of manufacturer’s specifications as they pertain to diesel engines and other equipment components.

• Ability to operate motor vehicles and equipment.

• Ability to interpret and follow written and oral instructions.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program;

or

• Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions require possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License and any endorsements necessary to operate specific vehicles or equipment.

• Certain positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.

• Certain positions require an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.

• Certain positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.

• All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.

• Certain positions require employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

• Certain positions require possession of an active Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H).

• Certain positions require possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
