DEFINITION: This is journey level locksmith trades work in ensuring the operability of locks and related equipment in a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanically, electronically, or pneumatically controlled locks. Work involves conducting routine testing; troubleshooting problems associated with locks and mechanisms; performing necessary repairs, adjustments, and parts replacement; and maintaining inspection and maintenance records. Employees in this job are responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates during work assignments that do not compromise security. An important aspect of this work involves ensuring the operability of equipment designated to restrain and control inmate movement to ensure the safety and security of employees and inmates. An employee in this job exercises considerable independence in determining work methods and procedures and receives assignments either orally or in writing. Work is reviewed by a technical or administrative supervisor through inspections and upon completion for compliance with established policies and procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Installs, services, and repairs mechanically, electronically, and pneumatically controlled equipment used to open, close, and lock doors and grilles.

• Duplicates, removes, and adds to key sets or re-keys locks.

• Selects key blanks, cuts keys, fits keys to locks, and makes master keys.

• Unlocks doors when keys are lost or broken in the lock, when locks are defective, or when combinations are unknown.

• Changes combinations of locks and opens safes.

• Adjusts and repairs door latches and locks.

• Inventories and maintains records of locks, keys, and lock replacement/repair parts.

• Inspects keys for normal wear and tests locking devices regularly to ensure proper operation.

• Ensures the secure disposal of worn, broken, or obsolete keys or lock systems.

• Works collaboratively with the Key Control Officer.

• Oversees inmate workers in the performance of non-security related tasks, such as moving materials, hanging doors, and repairing door closures.

• Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures security of work area.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of standard principles and practices of the locksmith trade.

• Knowledge of the procedures used in operating and repairing locks and locking mechanisms, making and fitting keys, opening locked doors, and repairing defective locks.

• Knowledge of the use of tools, equipment, materials, and measuring devices used in the locksmith trade.

• Knowledge of the methods and techniques used to estimate materials, tools, supplies, and time required for locksmith projects.

• Knowledge of the hazards and standard safety practices of the locksmith trade.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• Two years of experience in the locksmith trade;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
