SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Plumber series describes work in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and steam systems, fixtures, and components.

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and piping systems, components, and fixtures for air, gas, oil, water, steam, irrigation, waste disposal, and other related systems.

An employee in this job performs maintenance, inspection, repair, replacement, and installation work on plumbing systems, sewer line systems, or distribution lines that are both exterior and interior to facilities. Work involves measuring, cutting, threading, bending, and assembling pipe; troubleshooting, repairing, assembling, or replacing fittings, fixtures, and components; and utilizing plumbing and pipefitting installation drawings, blueprints, and schematics. Work may include assisting other trades employees or supervisors with complex plumbing projects and assigning and demonstrating plumbing related tasks to other trades and maintenance employees during the completion of a specific work-order. Work is performed independently and checked upon completion for adherence to guidelines and quality and timeliness standards.

• Determines materials, sequence of tasks, and work methods needed for installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance assignments.

• Performs maintenance and repair duties on a wide variety of plumbing and piping components in building equipment, such as heating, ventilating, and air conditioning units, refrigeration units, fire extinguishing systems, kitchen appliances, water softeners and filters, and heat exchangers.

• Assembles pipe sections, tubing, or fittings using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, or caulking; or soldering, brazing, or welding processes.

• Measures, cuts, threads, or bends pipe to required angles using hand or power tools and machines.

• Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and reassembles plumbing fittings and fixtures, such as drains, catch basins, toilets, urinals, sinks, showers, and radiators.

• Installs and repairs steam generators, autoclaves, and sterilizers.

• Tests and monitors pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.

• Performs inspections and maintenance on valve and meter boxes, septic tanks, cesspools, and utility storage areas, such as mechanical rooms, tunnels, and manholes.

• Replaces, connects, and maintains drain lines, water lines, underground water mains, service lines, and sewage lines.

• Repairs water main breaks, including locating and troubleshooting issues, sanitizing lines, and testing pressure, according to American Water Works Association rules and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regulations.

• Maintains, repairs, rebuilds, and replaces fire hydrants and water valves.

• Demonstrates and provides instruction to other trades and maintenance employees on plumbing and pipefitting related tasks.

• An employee in this job participates in the performance of other trades’ tasks consistent with operational and organizational requirements.

• Operates motor vehicles.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of methods, materials, hazards, safety precautions, and practices of the plumbing and pipefitting trades.

• Knowledge of flows, pressure, and capacity of water tanks and lines.

• Knowledge of the care and use of tools used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems, fixtures, and components.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to read and interpret plumbing blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Three years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing components and fixtures;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Certain positions require possession of a valid Pennsylvania license as a journey-level plumber.

• Certain positions require possession of an active motor vehicle license.

• Certain positions require candidates to possess, at the time of application, or obtain, within 18 months of the date of hire, a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater System Operators as a water or wastewater operator that is equal to or greater than the classification and sub classification of the water/wastewater system to be operated or maintained. Certification must be continuously maintained for the duration of employment in the position.
