COSMETOLOGIST 1

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the operation of a beauty shop in a state facility.

An employee in this class is responsible for operating a beauty shop involving the application of beauty culture techniques to patients/residents. Work also involves performing duties in wards for patients who are unable to come to the shop. General supervision is received from a higher level cosmetologist or barber, or from a nursing supervisor or other medical supervisor, but employees are independently responsible for applying standard trade practices to the work and for adherence to a prescribed work schedule. Work is subject to inspection by the State Board of Cosmetology for conformance to state laws and regulations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Works in the hospital/center beauty shop giving facial treatments, shampoos, hair cuts, scalp and hair treatments, permanent waves, relaxers, superfluous hair treatments, manicures, and other beauty treatments.

Coordinates appointments for patients/residents cosmetology services consistent with patients/residents health care and programming schedules, and the movement of patients to and from the beauty shop.

Visits wards to provide services for patients/residents who are too ill to be taken to the beauty shop.

Reports patients/residents scalp conditions that require further medical and/or hygienic monitoring such as head lice, psoriasis, ringworm and others.

Demonstrates and advises patients/residents on proper grooming and hygiene methods including, but not limited to make-up techniques, hair, face and nail care and cleansing techniques.

Counts tools regularly to ensure the security of cosmetology supplies and equipment and to prevent their retention by patients/residents.

Maintains inventory and requisitions supplies when necessary.

Sterilizes all beauty shop tools and equipment and maintains proper standards of sanitation within the beauty shop.

Participates in periodic training and instructional classes to update and maintain current in cosmetology techniques.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the modern methods and techniques of scalp and hair treatments, conditioning, styling and facial and beauty care methods.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and sterilization of beauty shop equipment and tools and sanitation requirements of the beauty shop.

Knowledge of inventory control and shelf life expectancies of beauty shop supplies, tools, and equipment.

Knowledge of first-aid methods and procedures.

Skill in the application of the various hair, scalp, and facial services.

Skill in the care and use of cosmetology tools and equipment such as scissors, thinning shears, electric clippers, hand held blow dryers, standing hair dryers, curling irons, razors, perm rods, clips, rollers, hair care chemicals and solutions, cuticle cutters, nail files, cosmetics, creams and lotions and others.

Ability to adhere to state, departmental, and facility regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to cosmetology services and to provide the various types of beauty treatments.

Ability to physically position patients/residents to perform cosmetology services.

Ability to perform work on schedule and in accordance with specific instruction.

Ability to work with and maintain a sympathetic attitude towards mentally or physically ill patients/residents who, at times, do not cooperate or are abusive.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a license as a Cosmetologist as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology.
