MICROGRAPHICS TECHNICIAN TRAINEE
DEFINITION: This is technical training work in a centralized microfilm production center for most Commonwealth agencies.
An employee in this class learns to operate a variety of specialized equipment used in microfilm production form hard copy, computer tapes and reproduction of film masters. Progressive operating skills are developed through the application of formal and/or on-the-job training. Work involves learning the full range of operations for microfilm production to include job specific computer programming and operation, camera operation, and film development. Employees perform duties with progressive independence under the guidance of higher-level personnel. Work is reviewed for demonstrated progressive technical proficiency as well as production quality, quantity and record keeping.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Learns to write and select existing programs using a mixture of computer languages for a computer output microfiche computer to translate information from disk or tape in the appropriate format and produce microform.
Participates in adjusting focal length, illumination, temperatures, feed units and mixes prescribed chemical ratios as required with microform equipment.
Logs project number, work required, work completed and operating times.
Prepares materials for processing, including removing staples, mending torn pages, labeling materials, mounting computer disks and tapes and related functions.
Performs designated area cleanup and preventive maintenance in the operation of sensitive equipment.
Picks up and delivers source material and completed production as assigned.
This would include loading and unloading trucks, and delivering documents.
Performs related duties and required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles of microform production.
Ability to learn to program and operate equipment in a centralized microform production center.
Ability to learn to make proper equipment adjustments to maintain correct film feed rate, focus, illumination and chemical flow.
Ability to learn to identify causes of machine malfunctions and make minor repairs.
Ability to prepare written reports and production activity.
Ability to stand for long periods and to lift boxes of paper, documents and supplies.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures, particularly in the safe and proper operation of equipment.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of computer programming experience;
or
One year of microform production including at least three months experience in programming Computer Output Microfiche equipment. Formal classroom or vocational training in computer programming or Computer Output Microfiche operation may be substituted for experience.
