DEFINITION: This is technical work in the development of displays, exhibits, and exhibitions in the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

An employee in this job performs technical work in the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of museum display, exhibit, and exhibition projects. Work involves meeting with program and design staff to identify and establish conceptual, design, and installation criteria for displays, exhibits, and exhibitions. Work also involves preparing drawings, layouts, and three-dimensional models representative of proposed projects; determining the tools and methods, and estimating the time, materials, and costs involved in meeting project objectives; building display cases, mounts, and other exhibit components; installing and maintaining lighting and other display effects; and maintaining project records, shop facilities, tools, and supply inventory. Work is assigned and reviewed for adherence to standards and specifications during and upon completion by professional staff.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (NOTE: The examples of work are representative of the work, but every position classified to this job may not perform all examples of work listed. Conversely, this is not an all-inclusive list of work examples.):

• Plans, designs, and fabricates exhibit components using various two and three-dimensional art media, and mechanical, electrical, and electronic devices to create special lighting and other effects.

• Constructs and installs wall mounts, cases, pedestals, and other display components, in accordance with curatorial and conservation standards, for use in museum displays, exhibits, and exhibitions.

• Prepares hand-drawn sketches, computer aided design layouts, and three-dimensional models to represent museum exhibit and exhibition plans.

• Manipulates photographs and other art media in digital formats for use in the design, layout, and printing of materials for displays and exhibits.

• Maintains, repairs, cleans, and replaces exhibit components and parts to ensure exhibitions remain aesthetically pleasing and in good working order.

• Maintains records, and facilities, tools, and materials used in the production of exhibits and exhibitions.

• Sets up and dismantles exhibits and loads and unloads deliveries of artifacts and objects.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the design, fabrication, and installation of two and three-dimensional visual arts media.

• Knowledge of digital art and design-related computer software.

• Ability to read and understand written materials.

• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• Three years of experience performing technical work in the design, fabrication, and installation of two and three-dimensional visual arts media;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
