WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR TRAINEE
DEFINITION: This is training level work in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant.
Employees in this class participate in in-service, out-service and on-the-job training programs designed to provide basic water treatment plant operation knowledges, skills, and abilities. Assignments are designed to provide progressively responsible experience in operating and maintaining motors, pumps, water
softeners, chemical feeders, chlorinators, filters, flow recorders, controllers and related equipment used in water treatment plants. Work is assigned in the form of oral or written instructions and is reviewed by a technical or administrative supervisor while in progress and on completion for quality, technical development and proper application of established principles and practices.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Participates in in-service, out-service, and on- the-job training programs in water treatment plant operation principles.
Assists in the operation of a water treatment plant.
Assists in taking water samples and running chemical tests; assists in the testing of the distribution system for leakage and stoppage.
Assists in the routine inspection and maintenance of plant equipment.
Assists in preparing plant or pool operation, maintenance and testing records.
Inspects and cleans well houses, spring houses, and water pumping stations.
Participates in such training courses, seminars, and other programs as are necessary for Certification as a Waterworks Operator.
Cuts grass, trims hedges, and performs additional groundskeeping duties at water treatment plants as required.
Operates Commonwealth owned motorized vehicles including automobiles and light trucks as necessary.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of arithmetic at the GED 2 level.
Ability to read at the GED 3 level.
Ability to write reports at the GED 2 level.
Ability to learn to use and care for the standard tools of the plumbing trade.
Ability to learn to perform routine mechanical and electrical repairs and to perform routine preventative maintenance on water plant equipment.
Ability to learn to read wiring/plumbing diagrams and schematic blueprints.
Ability to learn the safety precautions required while working with water treatment equipment and the plant's influent and effluent.
Ability to learn to perform routine chemical tests.
Ability to learn to read charts, graphs, meters and other measuring devices used in a water treatment plant.
Ability to perform heavy physical labor for short periods of time.
Ability to work outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Normal color perception.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Any combination of experience and/or training which provides the required knowledges and abilities.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid automobile operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth or Pennsylvania.
