MINE DRAINAGE TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

DEFINITION: This is skilled work in the operation and maintenance of a mine drainage treatment plant.

Employees in this class operate and maintain motors, pumps, aerators, slakers, flow meters, feeders, ph sensors and related equipment used in mine drainage treatment plants. Work includes conducting proceduralized chemical testing of plant influent or effluent to insure ph level, biochemical oxygen demand level, and safety of the plant's effluent for environmental protection. Work may include lead work and training responsibilities for laborers and semi-skilled laborers temporarily assigned to the mine drainage plant. Work is assigned in the form of oral or written instructions and is performed following established procedures and guidelines. Work is reviewed upon completion by a technical or administrative supervisor for quality and continuity of services.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates and maintains a mine drainage treatment facility.

Collects water samples and performs chemical tests to determine the mineral content and pollutant of mine drainage influent and effluent.

Reads meters and records findings on daily log.

Maintains records on maintenance performed on equipment and prepares report on plant operation as necessary.

Operates aerators, slakers, flow meters, feeders, ph sensors, iron analyzers, motors, pumps, valves, filters, and related mine drainage treatment equipment.

Performs routine preventative maintenance and makes minor repairs and adjustments to aerators, slakers, flow meters, feeders, ph sensors, iron analyzers, motors, pumps, filters, and related mine drainage treatment equipment.

Cleans plants, buildings, other structures, tanks and screens.

Operates Commonwealth owned motorized vehicles including automobiles and light trucks as necessary.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the operation of a mine drainage treatment plant.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required while working with mine drainage treatment equipment and the plant's influent and effluent.

Knowledge of the methods and tools used in operating and maintaining mine drainage treatment equipment.

Knowledge of the chemical techniques and equipment used in testing mine drainage treatment equipment.

Skill in the operation of mine drainage treatment equipment.

Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance and make minor repairs and adjustments to mine drainage equipment.

Ability to use and care for the standard tools used in the plumbing trade.

Ability to read charts, graphs, meters and other measuring devices used in mine drainage treatment plants and to maintain records on such readings.

Ability to read wiring/plumbing diagrams and schematic blueprints.

Ability to perform heavy physical labor for short periods of time.

Ability to work outdoors under varying climatic conditions.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to read and write at the GED 3 level.

Normal color perception.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Six months of experience in the operation and maintenance of a mine drainage treatment plant; or successful completion of a formal training program in the operation and maintenance of a mine drainage treatment plant approved by the using agency; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid automobile operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth or Pennsylvania.
