CORRECTIONS MATTRESS FACTORY FOREMAN 1

DEFINITION: This is advanced manufacturing work in the fabrication and renovation of mattresses at a state correctional institution factory.

An employee in this class instructs and trains inmate workers in the methods and techniques involved in the fabrication of mattresses, pillows, and mattress covers. Work also includes sterilization and renovation of used mattresses. Employee exercises independent judgment concerning the technical phases of fabrication. Duties also involve responsibility for the custody and discipline of inmates assigned to the employee during working hours. Employee may perform lead work. Work is received in the form of work orders. Supervision is received from a technical supervisor or administrative superior through personal inspections, conferences, and an analysis of production records.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises and instructs inmate workers in the techniques and methods involved in the fabrication of mattresses of cotton felt, inner spring, and synthetic foam in a variety of styles and sizes, and in the fabrication of pillows and mattress covers.

Supervises and instructs inmate workers in the techniques and methods involved in the sterilization and renovation of used mattresses.

Supervises and instructs inmates and participates in the operation and general maintenance and repair of machinery.

Inspects work in progress and finished goods for workmanship, proper construction, and adherence to fabrication standards.

Maintains order and discipline over inmate workers.

Issues and collects materials and supplies used by inmate workers.

Searches inmates and work area for contraband and insures security of the work area.

Maintains production schedules by planning and coordinating the work of inmates.

Plans, and coordinates the work activities of inmates so as to maintain production schedules.

Maintains production and inmate wage and attendance records.

Requisitions raw materials, supplies, and repair parts from stock.

Processes the finished product for shipment to customers or storage.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the manufacturing of mattresses.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and general repair of the machinery and tools used in the manufacturing processes.

Knowledge of the qualities and uses of the materials used in the manufacturing of mattresses.

Knowledge of the techniques and methods of vocational training applicable to the manufacturing process.

Ability to learn methods and techniques involved in the renovation and sterilization of used mattresses.

Ability to instruct inmate workers in the manufacturing process practices, and to teach desirable work habits.

Ability to learn and apply the techniques of vocational training as they apply to inmate rehabilitation.

Ability to maintain routine work records and to write reports.

Ability to supervise inmates and maintain order.

Sufficient physical strength and agility to cope with unruly inmates.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Three years of experience in varied machine or production operations in the manufacturing of mattresses and graduation from high school;

Three years experience as a Correction Officer, including one year involving varied machine and production operations in the manufacture of mattresses;

                                                                                                                                                                                                                   or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
