CORRECTIONS MATTRESS FACTORY SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION: This is supervisory manufacturing work in the direction of a mattress factory at a state correctional institution.

An employee in this class plans, directs, and supervises subordinate foremen engaged in training inmate workers in the methods and techniques involved in the manufacture of mattresses at a state correctional institution mattress factory. Duties include setting priorities, establishing manufacturing standards and production goals, and maintaining inventory levels. Employee is also responsible for the custody and discipline of inmates assigned to the mattress factory. Work is received in the form of a general work order outlining mattress requirements. Supervision is received from an administrative superior through periodic conferences and an analysis of production records.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Plans, coordinates, and supervises the work of subordinate foremen and inmate workers engaged in manufacturing mattresses such as cotton felt, innerspring, gatch, and core.

Participates in the development of mattress specifications and the setting of production goals according to customer demands.

Analyzes records and reports to insure that the proper quantity of goods are produced.

Inspects the manufacturing activities and facilities periodically to insure that the proper quality of goods are being produced.

Participates in the general maintenance and repair of machinery used in the manufacturing process.

Confers with foreman on problems of production and recommends changes to improve the quality and quantity of output.

Requisitions and maintains inventories of raw materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for efficient factory operation.

Maintains and interprets inventory, production, and time and labor cost records; and compiles periodic operating reports.

Maintains order and discipline over inmate workers; supervises and participates in searches of inmates and work area for contraband, and insures the internal security of the factory.

Reviews and evaluates the work performance of subordinate foremen; and prepares employee Performance Evaluation Reports.

Interprets rules, regulations, policies, standards, and objectives of the institution to subordinates.

Approves leave, schedules personnel, and authorizes or assigns overtime.

Receives employee grievances and complaints, conducts initial investigation into causes and conditions, discusses with employee, and resolves or recommends resolution to the grievance or complaint.

Performs related work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods and techniques of the manufacturing of mattresses.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and general repair of the machinery and tools used in the manufacture of mattresses.

Knowledge of the qualities and uses of materials used in the mattress manufacturing process.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the mattress manufacturing process.

Knowledge of the techniques and methods of vocational training applicable to inmate rehabilitation.

Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise the production operations involved in the manufacturing of mattresses.

Ability to keep inventory, production, and cost records and to compile operating reports.

Ability to supervise and instruct foremen and train inmate workers in the production operation and to teach desirable work habits.

Sufficient physical strength and agility to cope with unruly inmates.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Corrections Mattress Factory Foreman 1;

Four years of experience in the manufacturing of mattresses, including one year of supervisory experience; and graduation from high school;

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
