SERIES NATURE OF WORK: The Corrections General Industries Factory series describes production work performed in a Correctional Industries plant or factory operation.

DEFINITION: This is production work overseeing inmate workers in a Correctional Industries plant or factory operation in a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job is responsible for assigning, participating in, and instructing inmates involved in the production of products or services. Work includes providing on-the-job training and instruction to inmates performing a variety of production tasks; ensuring conformance to sanitation and safety standards; maintaining and distributing machinery and tools; and enforcing security and custody regulations in an assigned work area. Employees are responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates during training and work assignments. Work is received in the form of work orders, and independent judgment is exercised to determine the technical phases of production. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through conferences, reports, inspections, and analysis of production records.

• Oversees and instructs inmates in the application of production techniques and methods.

• Provides care, custody, and control of inmates during on-the-job training and work assignments.

• Plans work assignments, assigns work to inmates, and reviews inmate work for adherence to established standards.

• Inspects work areas and equipment for conformance with established sanitation and safety standards.

• Inspects, tests, cleans, repairs, issues, and collects tools and equipment required to carry out inmate training and work assignments; and prepares work orders for maintenance and repairs.

• Requisitions, receives, and stores raw materials and supplies.

• Maintains order and discipline among inmate workers.

• Searches inmates and work areas for contraband and ensures the security of work areas.

• Maintains records for maintenance, repairs, training progress, inventory, wages, and attendance.

• Processes finished products for shipment to customers or for storage.

• Work may be assigned and performed in varied areas in a manner consistent with organizational and operational requirements.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, and procedures used in a production operation.

• Knowledge of the use, maintenance, and general repair of the machinery and tools used in a production operation.

• Knowledge of the types, qualities, and uses of materials and supplies used in a production operation.

• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in a production operation.

• Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.

• Ability to read and interpret written material, including diagrams, manuals, and instructions.

• Ability to perform math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities)

• Three years of experience in the production of goods or services;

or

• An associate degree in industrial technology, operations management, business administration, or a related field; and one year of work experience in the production of goods or services;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training, which includes one year of work experience in the production of goods or services.
