DEFINITION: This is work in the care, custody, and control of an inmate work crew assigned to perform general maintenance, repairs, construction, and groundskeeping work in and around a state correctional facility.

An employee in this job performs and leads inmates in the performance of various tasks in the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment as well as new construction and renovation projects and the cleaning and groundskeeping of facility buildings and surrounding grounds. Work involves the performance of semi-skilled and skilled journey-level work in the various trades, such as plumbing, electrical, and carpentry. Work also includes responsibility and accountability for the custody, discipline, and security of inmates assigned to the work crew and the efficient accomplishment of work assignments. An employee in this job exercises technical independence in determining work methods and procedures and receives assignments either orally or in writing. Work is reviewed through inspections and upon completion for compliance with established standards and procedures and evaluation of results.

• Performs and leads inmates in the performance of a variety of building and equipment repair, maintenance, construction, cleaning, and groundskeeping tasks.

• Trains inmates in the proper repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment.

• Performs, leads, or assists in the performance of carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, roofing, refrigeration, masonry, plastering, steam-fitting, welding, machinery repair, and related projects.

• Requisitions necessary supplies and equipment.

• Maintains records and submits reports pertaining to supplies, equipment, and personnel.

• Performs related work as required.

ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in building maintenance, construction, or trades work.

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the maintenance, repair, or construction of buildings.

• Ability to plan, assign, lead, and inspect the work of an assigned work detail.

• Ability to read and interpret written material.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: (NOTE: Based on the Entry Level Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities):

• Four years of experience performing building maintenance, construction, or general trades work;

or

• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
