CORRECTIONS COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTOR

DEFINITION: This is specialized cosmetology instructional work in a state correctional institution's vocational training program.

An employee in this job plans, develops, and administers a cosmetology training program and maintains a cosmetology school in accordance with state regulations. Work includes the development of curriculum, question and answer sheets, and general course requirements in preparing inmate students for state board examinations for the Cosmetologist License. Work also involves instructing inmates in the practices, methods, and techniques of cosmetology by classroom instruction, demonstration, and on-the-job training. Work also includes providing cosmetology services to the inmate population. An employee in this job evaluates student progress through written examinations, observation, and conferences for adherence to standards, laws, and regulations. Work is performed under the general direction of an administrative or technical supervisor for the effectiveness of the cosmetology training program.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Instructs inmates in the practices, methods, and techniques of cosmetology by classroom instruction, demonstration, and on-the-job training, including procedures in haircutting and styling, dyeing and tinting, massaging, shampooing, sterilizing, and sanitation.

Plans, develops, and implements a cosmetology vocational training program and provides cosmetology services to the inmate population.

Prepares curriculum, lesson plans, and question and answer sheets on subjects, such as the history of cosmetology, care of equipment, personal and shop hygiene and health, anatomy, physiology, communicable diseases, shop management, ethics, use of tools and supplies, and the law.

Prepares student progress reports.

Arranges for eligible inmate students to take the Cosmetologist License test administered by the State Board of Cosmetology.

Informs appropriate staff of inmates who have been improperly assigned to the cosmetology program due to the type of crime committed, physiological impairments, or diseases.

Removes inmate students from the cosmetology program due to inability to assimilate training or for behavioral problems.

Performs repairs on cosmetology equipment.

Maintains inmate wage and attendance records.

Requisitions materials and supplies from stock.

Issues and collects tools, supplies and materials required by inmate students.

Maintains order and discipline among inmate students.

Searches inmates and work areas for contraband.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and practices of cosmetology.

Knowledge of the standard methods and practices of instructing students in a classroom setting and in on-the-job training situations.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of curriculum development, lesson planning, and student evaluation.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety practices applicable to the use of cosmetology tools and supplies.

Skill in the use of razors, scissors, combs, brushes, and other tools and equipment used in cosmetology.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to community effectively in writing.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid Cosmetology Teacher License issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology.
