DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICIAN 1 L0345

 

Definition: This is technical work in the collection, organization, classification, and summarization of quantified data.

An employee in this class collects, organizes, classifies, and summarizes quantified data to produce a number of recurring reports or an assigned phase of a major report or special study designed to satisfy governmental reporting requirements. Work involves the application of logical inference and elementary mathematical or statistical techniques such as means, medians, modes, and percentages to classify and interpret data and to insure the accuracy, relevance, and reliability of the data collected, compiled, and reported. Detailed instructions on collection methods and reporting form are given with work assignments. Completed work is reviewed by a higher-level statistician or administrative superior for completeness, accuracy and adherence to project outline.

Examples of Work: Plans, organizes and conducts the collection, classification, verification, logical interpretation and summarization of quantified data concerning agency or state programs or operations.

Coordinates data collection according to project or study schedule to insure deadlines are met.

Reviews data reporting forms submitted to insure completeness of the information received and to determine where reporting improvements can be made.

Visits or writes data collection sources to explain collection procedures and data requirements and answers questions regarding reporting procedures.

Compares data received with previous data to observe trends and resolves differences and inconsistencies resulting from the survey and data collection processes.

Classifies data into subcategories by type and prepares tables, charts and graphs.

Calculates estimates and trend projections through the application of elementary mathematical or statistical methods such as trend projections, means, medians, modes and percentages.

Evaluates tables, charts and graphs to determine the trend or logical interpretation of the data within the context of the project or study, and prepares narrative summaries to explain the meaning of the tables, charts or graphs.

Prepares assigned portions of narrative and interpretive narratives to fulfill governmental reporting requirements.

Recommends improvements to the data collection and processing system.

Performs related work.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the standard principles of collecting, organizing, classifying, verifying or adjusting, logically interpreting, presenting and summarizing quantified data.

Ability to learn the statistical goals and objectives of govern-mental agencies.

Ability to apply logic to the interpretation and summarization of quantified data.

Ability to effectively present findings and conclusions in tabular, graphic and narrative form.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and personnel in other units and agencies.

Minimum Experience and TrainingTwo years of experience as a Statistical Assistant;

or

One year of experience in the collection, compilation, editing and logical interpretation of quantified data and a bachelor's degree;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
