Definition: This is specialized lead work in the field of day care services for children.

An employee in this class is required to creatively implement a program which meets the educational, social, and health needs and the abilities of children. Duties are performed under the supervision of a professionally trained program supervisor and are reviewed to determine program effectiveness and consistency with standards, policies, and the overall objectives of the day care center.

Examples of Work: Plans the daily activities program for an assigned group of children at the day care center.

Acts as a lead worker by assigning, coordinating and reviewing work of assistants or aides assigned to the center.

Provides basic experiences in music, dramatics, storytelling, arts and crafts, and activities related to the social development and growth of the child with emphasis upon promoting the child's affective, cognitive, communicative, perceptual-motor, physical, and social development.

Gives individual help and encouragement as needed.

Provides opportunities for children to work out social relationships by promoting fair play and sociability through games and group activities.

Identifies and carries out rules regarding discipline, punish-ment, emergency practices, daily routines, safety, medicines, staff responsibilities, center facilities and related issues.

Insures that client records are maintained and reports prepared and submitted in accordance with center and county policies and procedures.

Observes and records child's development and communicates progress and needs to supervisor, caseworker and/or parent.

Meets with parents to advise them on the progress of their children.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of modern principles, practices, techniques, and current developments in the field of early childhood education.

Skill in the use of aids which will stimulate interest in the educational process.

Ability to apply teaching techniques and methods to the total day care program.

Ability to work constructively with children having disabilities.

Ability to explain the child day care program to interested care groups.

Ability to plan and implement daily program activities.

Minimum Experience and Training: A bachelor's degree to include 30 credit hours in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or the human services field;

or

An associate degree or its equivalent in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or the human services field; and 2 years work experience related to the care and development of children;

or

A bachelor's degree; and teaching certification in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or the human services field.
