DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION PROGRAM SUPERVISOR L0683
DEFINITION: This is supervisory work in the direction of a drug and alcohol prevention program in a Single County Authority.
An employee in this class is responsible for supervising lower level prevention specialists performing work in programs in such areas as schools, the community, driving under the influence, and employee assistance. Employees are responsible for assigning and reviewing work, approving leave, administering discipline, evaluating staff training needs, evaluating performance, interviewing applicants, and making recommendations for hiring. Programmatically, employees are responsible for preparing the annual prevention plan, assembling and fulfilling material for licensing requirements, developing or effectively recommending policy and procedure, developing grant proposals and questionnaires for research purposes. Work is performed in accordance with established regulations, policies and procedures. Employees are expected to exercise initiative and independent judgement in achieving objectives. Work is reviewed by an administrative superior through conferences and an evaluation of results.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Supervises lower level prevention specialists involved in implementing a varied prevention program in a Single County Authority.
Establishes prevention goals and objectives for the county and monitors progress of prevention program as implemented by staff.
Writes one and five year county prevention plans based on statistics and data generated from needs assessments.
Research and write special grant proposals for funding.
Prepares comprehensive service and administrative plan outlining goals and objectives for management purposes and to satisfy licensing requirements.
Train or secure training for prevention staff and prevention service providers in the county.
Attends presentation sessions of prevention staff in order to evaluate and improve their style.
Prepares budget for Prevention Unit by projecting salary and other costs and potential grant awards.
Prepares questionnaire from research in order to conduct a needs assessment.
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of current drug and alcohol prevention and treatment practices and philosophies.
Knowledge of the principles of basic supervision.
Knowledge of the techniques and practices for developing and writing grant proposals, conducting needs assessments and comprehensive plans.
Knowledge of techniques and practices utilized in the preparation of the budget.
Ability to learn the principles of basic supervision.
Ability to speak effectively in public and express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION PROGRAM SUPERVISOR (CON’T.)
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, community groups, and the general public.
Ability to develop rules, regulations, policies and procedures for the prevention program.
Ability to conduct needs assessment surveys to determine prevention needs.
Ability to develop and present training courses on new prevention concepts.
Ability to evaluate prevention program effectiveness.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year as a Drug and Alcohol Prevention Specialist;
or
A Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Education, the Social or Behavioral Sciences or related fields and two years of progressively responsible experience in prevention activities;
or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
