VOCATIONAL ADJUSTMENT SERVICES TRAINEE                            L0901

Definition:

This is training level work in the field of vocational adjustment services at an agency providing services to individuals with mental health conditions or intellectual disabilities.

An employee in this class participates in a structured training program designed to develop technical competency and proficiency in the design, implementation, and evaluation of vocational adjustment segments of individual program plans to further the comprehensive treatment/habilitation of patients/residents. As knowledges and skills are acquired, the variety and difficulty of assignments increase, and more latitude is provided for judgment and decision making. Training and work assignments are performed under the close supervision of a Vocational Adjustment Services Supervisor or other supervisor who assigns work, outlines methods and objectives, and reviews work while in progress and upon completion for quality and achievement of training program goals.

Examples of Work:

Participates in a structured training program designed to develop the knowledges and skills necessary for work in the design, implementation, and evaluation of vocational adjustment segments of comprehensive individual patient/resident program plans.

Participates in developing, monitoring, evaluating, and implementing vocational adjustment segments of comprehensive individual patient/resident program plans.

Participates in supervising or directing and instructing therapeutic activity aides in the conduct of vocational adjustment activities such as shop activities, furniture repair, horticultural activities, patient/resident worker activities, sub-component assembly, materials handling, collating, sorting, and packaging.

Participates in advanced or specialized training; prepares detailed reports on such assignments.

Learns the methods of effective use of volunteer resources.

Attends staff meetings, conferences, and multi-disciplinary team meetings, as assigned.

Learns to maintain necessary administrative and clinical records.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the various kinds of vocational adjustment activities, such as shop activities, furniture repair, horticultural activities, patient/ resident worker activities, sub-component assembly, materials handling, collating, sorting and packaging, and the techniques to motivate patients/residents interest and participation in them.

Knowledge of individual and group behavior and effective ways of working with individuals with mental health conditions or intellectual disabilities.

Ability to learn the techniques of establishing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship with individuals with mental health conditions or intellectual disabilities.

Ability to learn and develop the skills used in providing vocational adjustment services.

Ability to learn to observe and accurately report on patient/ resident behavior.

Ability to learn the theory and methods of adapting and implementing vocational adjustment programming to meet the emotional and behavioral needs of patients/residents.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Experience and Training:

Graduation from a four year college or university with major course work in vocational rehabilitation, vocational education or counseling, or a related human services field;

or

Four years of experience in the field of vocational adjustment services for individuals with mental health conditions or physical disabilities;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
