CUSTODIAL WORK SUPERVISOR                                                                    L1023

Definition:

This is supervisory work in the custodial care of public buildings and surrounding grounds.

An employee in this class is responsible for directing all custodial functions at a facility in which the custodial function is limited in scope, or is an assistant to a higher level custodial position at a medium to large facility or office complex. Duties include planning, assigning, and supervising the work of a moderate size group of employees performing the cleaning function in a building or group of buildings and surrounding grounds. General instructions are received from a supervisor and some latitude is allowed in planning work and scheduling work assignments. Work is subject to review by a supervisor for compliance with established standards of cleanliness and orderliness.

Examples of Work:

Administers a cleaning department with 20 or fewer employees.

Supervises the work of between 20 and 50 custodial workers comprising a portion of a cleaning department and variety of cleaning functions such as mopping, dusting, scrubbing, polishing, and aseptic cleaning in residences, hospital wards, dormitories, infirmaries, and office buildings.

Maintains employees time records; schedules work assignments; and arranges for days off including vacation and sick leave.

Makes frequent inspections of custodial work performed by staff and orders corrections and adjustments as necessary.

Maintains records and submits reports pertaining to supplies, equipment, and personnel.

Prepares work schedules and arranges last minute schedule changes due to special circumstances, absenteeism, etc.

 Requisitions necessary supplies.

Requests needed repairs for building and equipment.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in custodial operations.

Considerable knowledge of the operation, use, and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.

Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of employees performing a variety of custodial tasks.

Ability to train employees in cleaning and other custodial duties.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

Minimum Experience and Training:

Three years of experience in custodial work including one year in the capacity of a lead worker. Graduation from high school may be substituted for one year of working level experience.
