SEMI-SKILLED LABORER                                                                                    L1056  

Definition:

This is semi-skilled manual work in the construction and maintenance of various public works projects.

An employee in this class performs semi-skilled work alone or assists a skilled workman; or may function as lead worker for a small crew of manual workers performing routine tasks. Work involves the use of a large variety of construction and maintenance equipment and tools in many different tasks which frequently required the application of skills acquired on the job. Employees receive oral instructions and work is checked by inspection during process and upon completion.

Examples of Work:

Operates and services a stationary compressor motor; operates the tools and attachments powered from a stationary compressor motor.

Builds simple forms for cement work using carpenter tools; mixes and places cement; finishes cement using mason tools; lays stone and block walls.

Drives a truck to haul men and materials to and from jobs; assists in the performance of the job.

Makes repairs to buildings and building facilities; uses tools of the carpentry, electrical, plumbing and other building trades in the performance of maintenance work.

Checks truck weights at stone quarries to see that correct amounts of stone are being delivered.

Assists in taking care of buildings and grounds in parks and game preserves.

Acts as helper to skilled tradesmen and assists them in performance of their duties.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the tools and methods used in building and public works maintenance and construction.

Ability to operate simple machines, motors, and tools.

Ability to direct a small crew of manual laborers.

Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.

Freedom from disabling defects and sufficient physical strength to lift and move heavy objects and to do work under adverse weather conditions.

Minimum Experience and Training:

One year of experience in laboring work including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance or construction;

or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
