Definition:

This is supervisory work in directing a large group of workers engaged in manual work.

An employee in this class lays out and directs the work of a sub-foreman, semi-skilled laborers, laborers and inmate help. Some tasks may require specialized abilities, but the majority of the time assigned tasks are of a routine nature. The essential requirement is the ability to supervise assigned workers in the efficient accomplishment of assigned tasks. Employees have limited responsibility for making difficult or technical decisions. Detailed assignments are received in all but routine tasks, and work is checked in progress and upon completion by a supervisor.

Examples of Work:

Supervises workers in routine construction and maintenance work.

Assigns work to a sub-foreman or other subordinates.

Supervises workers in maintenance of grounds and buildings in a county setting.

Instructs and otherwise assists those under his direction.

Keeps and approves time records and makes reports as required of work performed.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of equipment and methods used in assigned tasks.

Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and safety rules pertaining to the operation of equipment.

Ability to plan and supervise the group work of a sub-foreman, semi-skilled laborers, laborers and inmates.

Ability to use ordinary maintenance tools and equipment.

Ability to make time and materials reports.

Freedom from disabling effects and sufficient strength to lift and move heavy objects and work under adverse weather conditions.

Minimum Experience and Training:

Four years of experience in performing manual labor, semi-skilled labor or maintenance work, including at least two years of experience as a lead worker and some experience in the operation of automotive and related equipment; and such training as may have been gained through completion of the eighth grade in school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
