SECURITY OFFICER 1 L1085

 

Definition: This is routine security or introductory police work in protecting county property and maintaining the security of a county facility.

An employee in this class is responsible for patrolling a county facility or an assigned area to protect and guard property or persons from fire, theft, trespass or other hazards; or participates in a training program to acquire the skills, knowledges, and attitudes required to provide police services for county facilities, grounds, and employes. Work may involve regulating the activities of patients, patrons or the general public, and may include performing limited police duties. Duties may require the use of motorized transportation to conduct patrols. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed rules and procedures. Supervision is received through daily instructions and inspections, or the examination of time clock records; or through a review of training program participation and skill development.

Examples of Work: Patrols an assigned area; watches for fires, prowlers, vandalism or other unusual occurrences; makes rounds of buildings and punches time clock periodically, and makes other reports as required; or participates in a formal and on-the-job training program designed to develop police knowledges, skills, and attitudes.

Directs traffic and enforces parking regulations.

Assists and directs visitors; furnishes information in a courteous manner.

Maintains orderly conduct among patients, students, employes, and the general public.

Performs incidental custodial and maintenance duties.

Prepares reports of activities.

Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledges, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of common traffic safety rules.

Knowledge of common building safety practices.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to learn basic methods and techniques of traffic control and criminal investigation.

Ability to work long hours alone under varying climatic conditions.

Ability to remain alert at all times and to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Ability to deal firmly but tactfully with patients, students, employes, and the general public.

Minimum Experience and Training: No previous experience or training required.

Necessary Special Requirement: Using agency may require possession of a valid Pennsylvania motor vehicle operator's license.
